Identifying The Displaced
Bringing Migrant Stories To Light

Identifying The Displaced

A multidisciplinary exploration into the value of personal effects in identifying those lost to the Aegean Sea

Identifying The Displaced

Identifying The Displaced

Identifying the Displaced is a transdisciplinary humanitarian effort which aims to promote and enhance the value of personal effects as a forensic aide in the migration context. Drawing together international experts in design, forensic anthropology, forensic pathology, and human identification; the heart of the project is a database of more than 500 personal belongings recovered with identified and unidentified migrants who have lost their lives along the ‘River of Death’, a particularly treacherous migratory route separating Turkey and Evros in the North of Greece.

Our Database

Our database contains photographs of over 500 personal belongings, attributed to the identities of more than 100 people who died in the Evros region between 2002-2022. Through a unique first-person narrative, each object tells the story of what is known about each individual: how and when they were found, what they were wearing, and what they carried with them on their journey.

We believe in the power of storytelling, collaboration, and interdisciplinary exchange. Whether you are a migration scholar, jewellery appraiser, art historian, forensic expert, police officer, oceanographer, translator, NGO, civil servant, or member of the public – we are keen to hear from those who can volunteer their efforts towards identifying our growing catalogue of migrant case studies.
